The Vaclav Havel Library Notebooks 2010/3: History of Kampademie

The third volume of The Vaclav Havel Library Notebooks is based on the history of Kampademie ("Academy on Kampa"), a philosophical association, whose members included Ivan M. Havel and leading Catholic intellectuals Zdeněk Neubauer, Radim Palouš, Martin Palouš, Daniel Kroupa, Pavel Bratinka, Tomáš Halik and others. Kampademie at the time of Havel’s imprisonment was his partner in correspondence dialogue, whose world-famous output subsequently became Havel’s Letters to Olga from prison. Daniel Kroupa and Martin Palouš are the editors of this Notebook.

Havel in a Nutshell: Methodological Guide

The book is intended for high school teachers. It contains, in the form of worksheets, specific instructions on how to teach about the life of Václav Havel, topics he thought about, and totalitarianism in which he spent most of his life. Nina Rutová is the author of this book.

Fausting

In this collection of texts from 1986 the members of the Kampademie philosophical association responded to Havel’s play Temptation. It includes the works of Ivan M. Havel, Radim Palouš, Martin Palouš, Daniel Kroupa, Pavel Bratinka, Helena Webrová and Zdeněk Neubauer. It will be supplemented with a contemporary transcription of an conversation with Václav Havel the Kampademics were engaged in. So far published only in Expedition samizdat edition.

Letters from Olga

Collection of texts which came to Václav Havel in prison in the years 1981 to 1983. The majority consists of the letters of Ivan M. Havel in whose redaction the Kampademie philosophical association prepared answers to Havel’s letters. This collection of letters written to prison, and so far remaining only in manuscript, is an unknown "second half" of the world-famous Letters to Olga.

Diary entry for 5. December 2005, To the Castle and Back

„In short, Being has a memory. And thus even my insignificance – as a bourgeois child, a laboratory assistant, a soldier, a stagehand, a playwright, a dissident, a prisoner, a president, a pensioner, a public phenomenon, and a hermit, an alleged hero but secretly a bundle of nerves – will remain here for ever, or rather not here, but somewhere. But not, however, elsewhere. Somewhere here.“
