Yesterday, on Wednesday 28 January 2015, Seán Barret, the Ceann Comhairle (speaker) of Dáil Éireann (the Irish Parliament), paid a visit to the Václav Havel Library. This took place as part of an official visit centred on Mr. Barret’s participation in the international forum Let My People Live. In a meeting with the executive director of the Václav Havel Library, Marta Smolíková, he viewed the institution’s archive and permanent exhibition on the life and work of Václav Havel, as well as discussing forthcoming Havel-related events in Ireland. The most important of those will without doubt be the ceremonial placing of a bust of Václav Havel by the academic sculptor Marie Šeborová in the prestigious buildings of Dáil Éireann. The honour is the initiative of the founder of Art for Amnesty, Bill Shipsey, who is a key figure in the cultivation of Václav Havel’s legacy in Ireland; in 2013 Mr. Shipsey was behind the creation of the second ever Havel’s Place memorial and its installation at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Park.
