The author, considered one of the most important Slovenian writers, participated in the partisan resistance, leading to his imprisonment in Dachau, Bergen-Belsen and elsewhere. He is responsible for dozens of publications, including diaries, novels, poetry collections and memoirs, several of which (such as The City in the Bay and Necropolis) have achieved world renown.
