The young novelist Katrina Kalda originally comes from Estonia (born 1980) but has lived in France since the age of 10 and writes in her second mother tongue, French. She has had three novels published to date on the prestigious Gallimard imprint. Her debut – Un roman estonien (An Estonian Novel) – was issued in Czech by Havran as Estonský roman, translated by Helena Beguivinová.

Katrina Kalda now comes to Prague to introduce her second novel published in Czech Arithmétique des dieux (Arithmetic of the Gods), in which she returns to her native country’s thorny history. Like the author, its narrator is a young Estonian woman who moves to France with her mother in the late 1980s. The death of a close relative leads her to explore her family’s history, in particular the identity of her father, who was born at the start of WWII in German-occupied Estonia.

Simultaneous translation provided. Organised by the Institut français in cooperation with the Havran publishing house and the Václav Havel Library.
