Václav Havel as a playwright, dissident, politician, prisoner, president… Michael Žantovský will speak with David S. Danaher and Kieran Williams, two US Czech Studies experts who have authored new monographs on Havel.

Where have the academics been in accord in their explorations of Havel’s oeuvre, and where do they diverge? Even if you feel you are already sufficiently familiar with Havel’s work, both books offer a range of new, unexpected insights and encourage you to look at highly familiar material in a new way.

Debate in Czech with some forays into English.

David S. Danaher is a Professor of Slavic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His main teaching and research interests include Václav Havel and the Czech culture of dissent, Leo Tolstoy, and cognitive ethnolinguistics.

Kieran Williams is a political scientist at Drake University (Iowa, USA). He studied at Princeton and Oxford and has written books on the 1968 "Prague Spring", intelligence services, electoral systems and most recently a biography of Václav Havel.
