On Saturday 4 October 2014, a Havel’s Place was ceremonially unveiled in front of the café at the Municipal Library in Hradec Králové at 11AM.

The Havel’s Place memorials consist of a pair of armchairs joined by a table with a Linden tree growing through it. According to its designer, architect Bořek Šípek (pictured with the long-term director of the Klicperovo divadlo theatre, Ladislav Zeman), it symbolises the democratic dialogue that was essential to Václav Havel.

The creation of a Havel’s Place in Hradec Králové was initiated by deputy mayor Josef Krofta.

The Václav Havel Library was represented at the ceremonial unveiling by its executive director Marta Smolíková and Karel Schwarzenberg, one of its founders.

A Word about Words – samizdat essay

„The point I am trying to make is that words are a mysterious, ambiguous, ambivalent and perfidious phenomenon. They can be rays of light in a realm of darkness, as Belinsky once described Ostrovsky’s Storm. They can also be lethal arrows. Worst or all, at times they can be one or the other. They can even be both at once!“
